Jeonju

The original makgeolli alley — a kettle of rice wine comes with a table of side dishes, and more arrive with each refill; since 2024 most shops price the first round as a set for two.

Houses the 1410 portrait of King Taejo, founder of the Joseon dynasty, in a walled compound of old pines and bamboo that gives you a real palace atmosphere without Seoul's crowds.

Jeonju is the birthplace of bibimbap; Gajok Hoegwan (since 1982) is the reference for the original, proper 30-topping version.

Jeonju's signature bean-sprout-and-rice soup with a cracked egg — a regional specialty and famed hangover cure.

Ground floor is a real produce and side-dish market; the second-floor Cheongnyeon (Youth) Mall is young-owner cafes and bars, and the Fri/Sat night market fills the aisles with grill stalls and live music. Jeonju's kongnamul gukbap (bean sprout rice soup) shops sit around the edges.

The whole village is the backdrop, so unlike Seoul you are not just wearing hanbok for one palace — you wear it all day.
